Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding the GIPHY API. If you don't see your question listed here, feel free to email support@giphy.com and we'll get back to you! If you think you've found a bug with the API or its documentation, please file an issue via GitHub Issues. Thanks!

Q: How can I obtain an API Key to start playing with the GIPHY API and start making GIF-tacular things?
A: You can obtain an individual rate-limited key by logging into this developer portal with your GIPHY account and then creating an app. You'll be asked to create a GIPHY account if you don't already have one. Once you've created an app, it will be given it's very own key which you can use to query our API.

Q: Why do I have to create an app to get an API key? I just want to play with the API!
A:Hey, we hear you, but we've made creating an app a super simple process. There's no obligations, just provide some basic info and play away!

Q: How do I use the API Explorer?
A:The API Explorer makes real live calls to the API; once you specify which endpoint and parameters you'd like to use, the API Explorer shows you actual responses from the API. You need an API key order to use the API Explorer, so you must create an app as outlined above.

Q: What's the rate-limit for a newly created key?
A: We allow all newly created keys to have a maximum of 10k requests a day. Need to make more requests? Need support on our side to help you launch your app into production? See the next question.

Q: I'm ready to move my app into production! How can I get an production API Key that doesn't have rate limits?
A: Once you're ready to use the Giphy API in production, click on the "Request a production key" link on the app dashboard. We'll ask you to provide a little bit more info about your app and, if it meets our criteria, we'll upgrade your app and work with you to make sure your GIPHY integration is rock-solid.

Q: What conditions does my app/project need to meet in order to get a production API Key?
A: Glad you asked! As per our section 5 A of our terms of service, we require all apps that use the GIPHY API to conspicuously display "Powered By GIPHY" attribution marks where the API is utilized. You can find approved official logo marks here. You may also be asked to provide screenshots or a video of your attribution placement during the application process.

Q: I applied for a production key and my app was rejected. What does that mean? Can I reapply?
A: If you were rejected, don't fret. We'll provide you feedback on why your app didn't qualify for a production key. Oftentimes, your app may not need to make unlimited requests, and will function just fine with a rate-limited key. If you were rejected, and want to reapply, just reply to the notification email we sent you and we can help you restart the process.
